RBA Ends Suspense with Interest Rate Announcement

The Reserve Bank of Australia has delivered the result of its monthly board meeting.

As expected, board members decided to leave the cash rate at a record-low 2 per cent, where it has been since May.

A travel guide company says it is surprised its readers ranked Brisbane as one of the world’s most “beautiful” cities in the world – but it’s no shock to the city’s Lord Mayor Graham Quirk.

Foreign investment fees set to be introduced

Currently no fees apply to foreign investment applications in Australia.

But there will be soon following the House of Representatives Economics Committee report recommending the government apply a modest administrative fee to the current screening for all foreign purchases of residential real estate, including purchases by temporary residents, to fund compliance and enforcement activities.

It will apply to residential, commercial, developer, business and rural applications.

Reserve Bank Decision Suprise

The Reserve Bank of Australia has announced the result of its monthly board meeting.

The official cash rate has been reduced to a new record-low of 2.25 per cent after being left on hold at 2.5 per cent since August 2013.

The Reserve Bank’s decision has come as a surprise: a survey of 30 economists and commentators found that 28 expected the cash rate to remain unchanged.

Seasonal factors in Southeast Queensland and the State’s tourism centres saw a slight increase in vacancy rates over the Christmas/New Year period, however overall market conditions remained tight, according to the REIQ.
The REIQ Residential Rental Survey for December 2014 indicates a decrease in rental stock, suggesting that investors may be taking advantage of improved selling conditions to place their investment properties on the market.
